Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS TCVM?

Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) is a holistic approach to animal health, based on the foundations of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for humans. It has been around for more than 2000 years. A combination of modalities, such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, food therapy, and Tui-na are used to maintain and restore balance and harmony within the body to prevent and treat disease.

Diagnoses are based on recognizing patterns of disharmony and imbalances in the body, with the practitioner examining pulses, tongue characteristics, trigger points, and shen among other qualities. Treatment plans are then tailored to the specific needs of each animal with a view to restoring balance.

DO YOU STILL PRACTICE WESTERN MEDICINE?

It would be impossible to diminish the value of Western medicine after almost 30 years of developing those skills. Like everything, there is a balance that needs to be achieved. Dr. Kathleen Fearon will still be practicing Western medicine, including having a fully equipped mobile clinic before the end of 2025. Many of you knew Dr Fearon when she owned her first mobile clinic, before opening the Trumbull Church Hill Road location of Home Veterinary Services. She will be able to offer everything available at brick-and-mortar clinics, from routine exams and vaccines, to surgery and digital x-ray. You will not have to incur the cost of having her do a house call. Reach out to learn more about where the Western medicine services will be offered.

WHAT DO I DO IN THE CASE OF AN EMERGENCY?

If your pet is experiencing an emergency, please contact one of the area emergency clinics. While Dr Fearon is often available after hours, your pet is likely to benefit from the resources readily available at the 24 hour emergency and referral clinics.
